“They Peabody/ Essex Museum- Ship Figureheads Exhibit” By Yvonne Cardinal
Stepping into the grand nautical exhibit is like stepping into an open ballroom, lled with natural light and elegant decor. Shiny hardwood oors cover the base of the room, and towering cream-colored walls ow upwards to the raised ceiling. The sparkling crystal chandeliers are suspended with a quaint elegance. Bright borders of electric lights holding onto the ceiling aim a soft glow upon the whole area.
The grand room remains empty, except for the occasional passerby, eagerly viewing the numerous paint- ings and massive ship gures. Figureheads lunge from their chained posts upon the walls, staring ahead. An Indian and yound maiden seem to converse with each other across the spacious room. A young Native Ameri- can boy stands proudly in the light from the window, looking over every spectator that enters into his domain. A handsome brunette woman near him dressed in a owing robe has a look of hope in her eyes, as she gazes towards heaven, imagining somewhere spectacular.
Many paintings of tumultuous waters with ships hang alongside the occasional portrait of a sea cap-
tain or navigator. Tools such as oars and spears from foreign lands add to the prize collection. Touching the plastered panels are stationed tiny model ships, bound into glass cages so they will never taste the sea. Yet, demanding the most attention, the massive window opposite the entrance delivers beams of sun into the room, which illuminates everything. Treasures from the seafaring age never cease to dazzle in their wondrous exhibit.

you will adapt to the environment
